Creating Vector Graphics from Pixel Graphics

Unlike pixel graphics, vector graphics are not made up of individual image dots. Instead, they are built from geometrically defined elements such as lines, curves, circles, and polygons.

These individual vector elements contain mathematical information that describes shapes, contours, and paths. How to Turn a Pixel Graphic into a Vector File in a Few Steps

A pixel file can be vectorized in just a few steps using a graphics program such as Adobe Illustrator. The simpler the graphic, the easier and cleaner the vectorization process will be. Logos, icons, and high-contrast graphics are usually well suited for this purpose.

Photos, on the other hand, are generally less suitable for automatic vectorization. They contain many colors, gradients, shadows, and fine pixel details, which makes it difficult to create clean and usable paths. For best results, use a logo or graphic with clear contours, strong contrast, and ideally a neutral or transparent background.

Step 1

Open Adobe Illustrator and create a new project. Then import the logo or image file you want to convert. To do this, click on “File” and then select “Open”. Choose the desired file from your computer and open it in Illustrator.

Your graphic will now appear on the artboard. Click on the image to select it. In the upper menu bar, you will see the “Image Trace” option. Select this function to start converting the pixel image into vector-based shapes.

Depending on the graphic, you may need to adjust the tracing settings. For example, you can choose whether the result should be black and white, grayscale, or color. For logos and simple graphics, a high-contrast black-and-white setting often produces the cleanest result.

Illustrator will generate a preview of the traced graphic. Once you are satisfied with the result, click “Expand” to convert the traced image into editable vector paths. The individual parts of the graphic are now grouped together and can be scaled without any loss of quality.

If you want to edit individual elements separately, right-click on the graphic and select “Ungroup”. You can then adjust specific shapes, remove unwanted elements, correct contours, or refine the overall appearance of the vector file.

After editing, save the finished file in a suitable professional format. Common formats for vector graphics include AI, EPS, SVG, and print-ready PDF files. For many print and finishing processes, a PDF standard such as PDF/X may be required.

What to Consider When Preparing a Vector File

Before using a vector file for production, it is important to check whether all elements have been converted correctly. Edges should be clean, curves should be smooth, and no unwanted shapes or background elements should remain in the file.

Text should either be embedded properly or converted into outlines, especially if the file will be sent to a print or production partner. This ensures that the design looks exactly as intended, even if the original font is not installed on another computer.

It is also helpful to keep the design as simple and clean as possible. Unnecessary details, very fine lines, or overly complex shapes may cause difficulties in certain production processes. A well-prepared vector file makes it easier to achieve accurate, high-quality results.
