Which software should you use for creating print data?

Which software should you use for creating print data?

When it comes to creating print data, it is important to use the right software depending on the requirements. This article provides a brief overview of the most well-known programs, but does not claim to be complete.

Adobe Indesign

Adobe Indesign makes it easy to create single-page or multi-page layouts. This program is the standard for most designers, agencies, and newspapers. Spot colors, finishes, color conversions, and much more can be implemented without any issues.

Adobe Illustrator

This program is ideal for creating vector graphics, such as logos or icons. The major advantage is the ability to scale graphics to any size without loss of quality, unlike pixel-based software such as Photoshop. We therefore particularly recommend Illustrator for logos and high-resolution graphics, while Indesign is better suited for multi-page layouts.

Photoshop

This is probably the most well-known program. Photoshop is suitable for editing pixel-based graphics, but in our opinion, it is not the best software for creating print data. This is due to the limited scalability of pixels. Those who want to use Adobe software should opt for Indesign or Illustrator. However, if you are very comfortable working with Photoshop, you can of course still create your print data with it.

Corel Draw

Corel Draw can be seen as a counterpart to Adobe Illustrator, as it is also very well suited for creating complex vector graphics. It is somewhat easier for beginners to use and more affordable to purchase. In our opinion, it is a very достой alternative to Illustrator.

QuarkXpress

This software can be compared to Indesign, but in our opinion, it feels somewhat outdated. The interface does not seem well thought out, and inkjet outputs tend to be of rather poor quality. We definitely recommend choosing Indesign (or Scribus) for multi-page layouts instead.

Scribus

Scribus is the free alternative and, after a slightly longer learning curve, delivers good results. If you are working with a limited budget, Scribus is definitely worth considering. What we like less are the PDF export with minor errors and the longer loading times. However, the price-performance ratio is excellent.

Conclusion

If you have a limited budget but sufficient time, you should consider learning Scribus. However, if you want the best possible results, it is hard to avoid paid software such as Adobe Indesign, Illustrator, or Corel Draw. We personally advise against QuarkXpress, as we do not find its interface and features convincing, despite its high price. Overall, it is important to note that some programs are better suited depending on the requirements. For example, Indesign is ideal for multi-page layouts for notebooks, while Illustrator works very well for presentation folders or ring binders.
