Bookbinding board is a particularly sturdy type of cardboard that originally comes from book production. As the name suggests, it is traditionally used for book covers and hardcover bindings. Today, however, it is also widely used in the production of premium presentation folders, rigid boxes, luxury packaging, and other applications where stability, durability, and a high-quality feel are essential.

Bookbinding board is available in various thicknesses. In general, the term refers to board materials with a thickness of around 1.5 mm to 4 mm. A common standard thickness is 2.5 mm, although stronger versions can also be used depending on the desired level of rigidity and the intended application.

Due to its high stability, bookbinding board is especially suitable as a carrier material for lamination. Cover materials such as fine linen, structured papers, metallic papers, or printed sheets can be applied to the board to create a refined and durable surface. A stable base material is important for this process, as thinner or less rigid materials may cause the covering to wrinkle, warp, or lose its smooth appearance.

Bookbinding board is available in both coated and uncoated versions. The right choice depends on how the material will be used. Uncoated bookbinding board has a more absorbent and slightly rougher surface, which can make it less suitable for detailed printed designs. Colors may appear less precise, and fine motifs may not look as sharp as they would on a coated board. Coated bookbinding board, on the other hand, provides a smoother surface and is therefore better suited for applications where print quality and clean visual results are important.

When bookbinding board is used purely as a base material for lamination, both coated and uncoated versions can be suitable. In this case, the final appearance is mainly determined by the laminated cover material rather than by the board surface itself.
