Printing with CMYK is often referred to as process color printing according to standardized color systems such as ISO. In this model, every color is created by combining specific percentages of the four base colors. Each value is defined as a percentage—for example, pure black is represented as 0C / 0M / 0Y / 100K.

It is essential to prepare print files in the CMYK color space rather than RGB to avoid unexpected color shifts. This is because RGB can display a broader range of colors that cannot be accurately reproduced in CMYK. Highly vibrant or luminous tones, in particular, may require the use of spot colors to achieve the desired result.

RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is based on light and is primarily used for digital displays such as screens. As a result, designs created in RGB may appear less saturated or slightly muted when printed. One reason for this is that RGB does not include a true black component in the same way CMYK does. For consistent and predictable print outcomes, especially in high-quality printed materials, working directly in CMYK is strongly recommended.

Important: When using spot colors such as HKS or Pantone, it is crucial to define the correct color channel to ensure accurate reproduction in print.

Understanding RGB in more depth

The RGB model simulates color perception by combining the three primary colors: red, green, and blue. It is an additive color model, meaning that colors are created by adding light. For example, combining red and blue produces a different color impression than either color alone, and combining all three at full intensity results in white.

This is the opposite of CMYK, where combining all colors produces a very dark tone. When converting designs from RGB to CMYK, certain colors cannot be reproduced exactly, which can lead to visible differences in the final print. To avoid these discrepancies and achieve optimal results, it is best to design directly in the CMYK color space.
