Filling Height

Filling height refers to the amount of content that fits into a mechanism, pocket, flap, folder, or binder. It is usually specified in millimeters and helps determine how much paper or material a product can hold.

As a general rule of thumb, 1 mm of filling height provides space for approximately 10 sheets of 80 gsm offset paper. A filling height of 5 mm therefore offers room for around 50 sheets of 80 gsm paper. These figures should be understood as approximate values, as the actual capacity can vary depending on paper thickness, material stiffness, inserts, and the type of construction used.

When configuring folders, binders, presentation folders, or similar products, it is important to consider in advance which contents need to fit inside. This may include single sheets, brochures, certificates, contracts, product information, samples, or additional inserts. Choosing the correct filling height ensures that the contents sit securely, the product closes properly, and the overall presentation remains neat and professional.

In many folders and binders, the filling height can be adjusted to match the intended use. The choice of mechanism should also be based on the required capacity. A simple filing fastener, for example, is suitable for a smaller number of sheets, while ring mechanisms can hold significantly larger quantities of paper.

Will my contents still stay in place if they are thinner than the specified filling height?

Yes, in many cases they will. For example, if a folder has a corner pocket with a filling height of 2 mm, it may initially appear too large for a single certificate or document. However, well-designed pockets are usually constructed so that even a single sheet can be held securely.

This is why capacity specifications are often given as a range, such as 1 to 20 sheets. The lower value indicates that even very slim contents can still be held properly, while the upper value shows the approximate maximum capacity. For sensitive documents, certificates, or presentation materials, it is always advisable to choose a solution that combines secure hold with an elegant appearance.
