What Is Film Lamination?

Which Film Lamination Processes Are Available?

There are two common processes used for film lamination: wet lamination and thermal lamination.

In wet lamination, an adhesive is applied to the film. The film and the paper or board are then bonded together using pressure and heat. During this process, the heat helps the solvent in the adhesive evaporate, creating a stable bond between the materials.

In thermal lamination, the film already has a layer of heat-activated adhesive. When heat is applied, this adhesive melts. Together with pressure, it bonds the film to the surface of the material. Thermal lamination is widely used because it allows for a clean and efficient finishing process.

When Is Film Lamination Useful?

Film lamination is useful whenever printed materials need additional durability, a more refined appearance, or improved resistance to external influences. It is particularly suitable for high-quality packaging, folders, covers, menus, product cards, and presentation materials.
