Format

A format describes a defined relationship between width and height, and depending on the product, also depth. A well-known example is the DIN A4 format, which measures 210 mm x 297 mm. Starting from DIN A4, the next formats can be derived easily by halving or doubling the sheet size, such as DIN A5 or DIN A6.

In packaging, folders, binders, and presentation materials, the format plays an important role because it determines not only the appearance but also the usability of the final product. A format must suit the contents, protect them properly, and create a harmonious overall impression. For example, documents, product samples, catalogues, certificates, or marketing materials may each require different dimensions.

Besides standard formats, custom formats are often useful when a product should have a particularly exclusive appearance or when the contents do not fit into a common DIN size. How exactly are DIN A4, A5, and other DIN formats calculated?

All DIN formats are based on the same ratio between width and height: 1 to the square root of 2. This proportion has a special advantage: when a sheet is halved along its longer side, the resulting smaller sheet keeps the same ratio. This is why DIN formats can be scaled up or down so easily.

The standard is based on the work of the German engineer Walter Porstmann, who helped establish a practical and consistent paper size system. Using this formula, it is possible to understand how the dimensions of DIN A4, for example 210 mm x 297 mm, are derived from the larger DIN formats.

The DIN system starts with DIN A0, which has an area of exactly one square metre. Each smaller A-format is created by halving the previous format. DIN A1 is half of DIN A0, DIN A2 is half of DIN A1, and so on until DIN A4, A5, A6, and smaller sizes.

Are formats other than DIN possible?
