Leather Fiber

Leather fiber, often referred to as “bonded leather,” is a material made from leather fibers, chrome-tanned shavings, and smaller vegetable-tanned leather residues from the leather industry. In the printing and packaging industry, it is commonly used as a covering or laminating material for high-quality surfaces. The material can be dyed in a wide range of colors, making many different design options possible.

Leather fiber combines many of the qualities associated with genuine leather, including its appearance, scent, and tactile feel. At the same time, it is usually more cost-effective than full leather, which makes it an attractive choice for premium-looking products with a more efficient use of resources.

The use of the terms leather fiber and bonded leather is defined by the European standard EN 15987, “Leather – Terminology – Key definitions for the leather trade.” According to this standard, materials with a leather content of less than 50% may not be declared as leather fiber material.

Because leather fiber is made largely from leather residues, it helps make use of valuable raw materials that would otherwise remain unused. This gives the material a resource-conscious character while still offering a refined, timeless appearance.

Its elegant surface, pleasant feel, and sophisticated look make leather fiber especially suitable for premium packaging, presentation boxes, rigid boxes, sample folders, and other products where a high-quality impression is important. The material provides a distinctive visual and tactile experience and can give packaging a luxurious yet understated character.

Leather fiber is particularly effective when combined with logo embossing. Blind embossing, for example, creates a subtle yet striking contrast on the surface. This results in a refined finish that enhances the overall appearance and gives the product a professional, high-end look.
