Material Properties

This property depends on the specific material and describes how well printing inks interact with its surface. Some materials, such as fine linen or natural linen, are better suited for embossing rather than printing. In essence, this term encompasses various material characteristics, including opacity, smoothness, and brightness. Brightness (whiteness) plays a key role in determining contrast and the visual impact of graphics. Materials with high opacity—meaning they allow less light to pass through—are generally better suited for text and images, as they ensure improved readability and visibility.

When it comes to color application, cardstock offers two main options: 4/0 and 4/4 color printing. A 4/0 configuration means single-sided printing using the CMYK color model, while 4/4 refers to double-sided printing in full color.

Which Printing Methods Does cardstock Use?

Depending on the production volume, cardstock uses either offset printing or digital printing. Digital printing is typically more cost-effective for smaller quantities, while offset printing becomes the preferred choice for larger runs due to its efficiency and consistent quality at scale.

Why You Might Consider Skipping Print Altogether

Not every material is ideal for printing—and sometimes, printing isn’t the best choice at all. Certain premium materials achieve a more refined and sophisticated look through embossing rather than ink application. Embossed designs create a tactile experience and convey exclusivity without relying on color.

Materials like fine linen, for example, are fully recyclable, FSC-certified, and environmentally responsible. When combined with custom embossing, they can create a high-end appearance that often surpasses traditional printed designs. Exploring alternative finishes and materials can open up new creative possibilities and help your product stand out.

For optimal results, it’s always important to prepare print-ready data carefully and align your design with the chosen material and finishing technique.
