Motif printing

Motif printing is a printing method in which a desired design, image, text, or a combination of these elements is printed directly onto a presentation folder, packaging, or another product. Depending on the design concept, the print can be applied to the outside, the inside, or across all visible surfaces. This makes motif printing especially suitable for custom packaging and printed presentation materials where a precise, high-quality visual appearance is required. To achieve a clean and professional result, the print data must be prepared very carefully, particularly with regard to resolution, colors, bleed, and positioning.

In motif printing, also known as image printing, a distinction is generally made between 4/0-color and 4/4-color printing. With 4/0-color printing, only one side of the material is printed in full color. With 4/4-color printing, both sides can be printed, allowing the outside and inside surfaces to be designed freely.

Suitable Materials for Motif Printing

For motif printing, a special image or motif printing material is typically used. This is usually coated paper or cardboard with a grammage of approximately 170 to 320 g/m². Coated materials are particularly well suited for detailed print motifs because the printing ink remains more on the surface instead of being absorbed deeply into the paper. As a result, contours, color transitions, and fine details can be reproduced with greater sharpness and accuracy.

A simple comparison helps illustrate the difference: a photograph printed in a high-quality magazine usually appears sharper, more vibrant, and more detailed than a photograph printed in a daily newspaper. Even if both images were printed using the same printing technology, the coated magazine paper would produce a cleaner and more brilliant result because of its smoother and less absorbent surface.

The cardboard used for motif printing is usually matte as standard. Depending on the desired appearance and level of protection, it can also be laminated with an additional matte or glossy film. Lamination protects the printed motif from scratches, abrasion, moisture, and everyday signs of use. This not only improves the durability of the printed product but can also extend its service life, making it a more sustainable solution in practical use.
