Neuromarketing

Put simply, neuromarketing focuses on buyers and on how purchasing and selection decisions are processed in the brain. A central question is how these decisions can be influenced. For a long time, traditional marketing assumed that buying decisions were mainly made rationally and consciously. Today, however, it is clear that emotions, associations and subconscious impressions play a much larger role than previously believed.

This is especially important in the field of packaging. Packaging is often the first thing a customer notices about a product. Before the product itself is touched, tested or evaluated in detail, the customer has already formed an impression based on its appearance, material, color, shape and overall presentation. In many cases, packaging becomes the first point of contact between the consumer and the brand.

Basics

Today, it is widely accepted that a significant part of the purchasing decision process takes place subconsciously. This means that consumers are often not fully aware of all the motives and impressions that influence their decisions. Even when customers are willing to explain why they chose a certain product, they may not be able to name every factor that played a role.

Neuromarketing aims to make these hidden decision-making processes more visible. By using neurocognitive measurement methods, researchers hope to gain a more direct understanding of how the human brain reacts to products, brands, packaging and advertising messages. These insights can then be used to better understand which emotional and sensory signals influence buying behavior.

Methods

The two methods most commonly used in neuromarketing are electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Functional magnetic resonance imaging is particularly expensive and is therefore mainly used by financially strong companies or within larger research projects.

Both methods are often combined with other psychological and physiological measurement techniques. These may include skin conductance measurements, eye tracking or heart rate monitoring. Together, these methods can provide a broader picture of how people react to certain stimuli, such as packaging design, colors, materials, finishes or product presentations.

In various experiments, participants were shown identical or different sales offers. These offers were presented in folders of varying quality, using different finishes, printed designs and colors. During the experiments, researchers measured brain activity and evaluated the decisions made by the participants.

The results were striking. Even when the sales offer, price and product were identical, many participants preferred the offer presented in the higher-quality folder. This happened even though they were told that they would not be allowed to keep the folder. In some cases, participants even chose a more expensive offer when it was presented in a more attractive and premium-looking folder.

From a rational point of view, this behavior may seem surprising. However, according to researchers and neurobiologists, these decisions are strongly connected to emotional experiences and perceptions. When the presentation of an offer appears more valuable, the offer itself may also be perceived as more valuable. In other words, a high-quality presentation can influence how trustworthy, desirable or premium a product or service appears.

At the same time, the accuracy and significance of neuroscientific measurements are still discussed critically. Not all experts agree on how precisely certain studies and measurements can explain consumer behavior. Nevertheless, many large international companies use neuromarketing methods to optimize products, packaging and brand communication. Since these methods are often very costly, their continued use suggests that companies see real practical value in the insights they provide.

For brands, neuromarketing highlights an important lesson: purchasing decisions are not based on facts alone. The way a product is presented can strongly shape perception. Packaging, materials, colors and design details can influence whether a product feels premium, trustworthy, innovative or desirable. This makes packaging much more than a protective shell. It becomes an active part of the customer experience and can have a direct impact on buying decisions.
