Paper Types

Paper types can generally be divided into uncoated papers and coated papers. Uncoated papers are used largely unchanged after production, while coated papers receive an additional surface treatment with a binding agent or coating layer. This creates a smoother, brighter, and more even surface.

Coated papers usually deliver better print results, especially when detailed images, fine color gradients, or high-resolution graphics are involved. Because the surface is less fibrous than that of uncoated paper, the ink remains more controlled on the surface. This reduces unwanted color bleeding and allows motifs, illustrations, and photographic elements to appear sharper and more accurate. For this reason, coated papers and cardboards are frequently used whenever a clean, detailed, and premium print result is required.

Uncoated papers, on the other hand, have a more natural feel and a more tactile surface. They are often chosen when a softer, more authentic, or more sustainable appearance is desired. Their absorbent structure can create a warm and elegant look, although fine details and intense colors may appear less crisp than on coated papers.

For many finishing techniques, such as hot foil stamping or blind embossing, the difference between uncoated and coated paper is often less significant than it is in classic printing. In these cases, the material thickness and stability are usually more important. A very thin sheet of paper, for example, is generally not suitable for strong embossing, because it does not provide enough resistance and depth for a clean result.

Another important distinction between paper types is the paper weight, also known as grammage. Grammage is measured in grams per square meter and indicates how heavy and usually how thick a paper is. Lightweight papers are often used for simple printed materials, while heavier papers and cardboards are used for premium packaging, covers, cards, folders, and other applications where stability and a high-quality feel are important.

In addition to appearance, printability, and thickness, sustainability is becoming increasingly important when choosing a paper type. Recyclable and recycled papers are playing a growing role, especially for brands and products that value environmentally conscious materials. The right paper choice can therefore influence not only the look and feel of a product, but also its ecological impact.

A brief historical overview

The most well-known direct predecessors of paper include papyrus and parchment. Other early materials, such as tapa, amatl, and huun, can also be seen as historical forerunners of paper. Long before modern paper production existed, different cultures used natural fibers, animal skins, plant-based materials, and woven surfaces to record information, create objects, and preserve knowledge.

Paper has always been a highly versatile material. Its form, production methods, and uses varied greatly across cultures and historical periods. In parts of East Asia, paper was not only used for writing and documentation, but also had cultural and sometimes almost sacred significance. At the same time, it served many practical purposes, ranging from decorative objects to everyday items.

The origins of paper production are generally associated with the Far East, particularly China. Before paper became widespread, materials such as silk were used as writing surfaces, but they were expensive and therefore not suitable for broad everyday use. Paper offered a more flexible and accessible alternative and gradually changed the way information could be recorded, shared, and stored.

In Europe, paper became common much later than in China, but it quickly developed into an everyday material. It was used for writing, printing, packaging, books, newspapers, drawing sheets, banknotes, wallpapers, and many other applications. Over time, paper became one of the most important materials for communication, trade, education, and product presentation.

Today, paper remains essential in many industries. Whether used for printing, packaging, branding, stationery, or premium presentation solutions, the choice of paper type has a direct effect on visual quality, durability, feel, and overall product perception.
