Partial UV Varnish

Would you like your presentation folders, sample folders, quotation folders, or packaging to leave a particularly memorable impression? A refined and distinctive design can be achieved through high-quality print finishing, especially by applying a targeted coating with partial UV varnish. This finishing technique creates striking visual and tactile effects that make selected design elements stand out immediately.

The Process

Partial UV varnish is a special coating that is not applied across the entire surface. Instead, it is used only on selected areas of the printed product to highlight specific design elements and create a premium finish.

The term UV varnish does not mean that the coating is mainly intended to protect against sunlight. The name comes from the production process. During application, the varnish is cured using UV light. This allows the coating to harden quickly and remain precisely in place.

The application process itself is very fast and usually takes only a few seconds. First, the printed sheet is cleaned to create the best possible surface for the varnish. The coating is then applied to the desired areas using an inkjet-based process. To ensure fast production and prevent the varnish from spreading, the material passes under a powerful UV dryer immediately after application. The partial UV varnish contains photopolymers, which are light-sensitive materials that harden instantly when exposed to UV light. As a result, the printed sheet can move directly to the next production step, such as cutting or further finishing.

The Effect

Partial UV varnish creates a slightly raised, relief-like structure on the coated areas. These areas feel noticeably different from the untreated surface and also stand out visually thanks to their subtle gloss. This combination of shine, depth, and texture makes the finish especially effective for premium printed products.

Logos, lettering, patterns, graphic details, or selected design elements are particularly well suited for partial UV varnish. The technique works best when the coated areas are large enough to be applied cleanly and precisely. Very small details may not produce the desired result. As a general guideline, lettering should usually be at least font size 12, while line thickness should not be below approximately 2 points, or around 0.7 mm.

Partial UV varnish is an excellent choice for drawing attention to individual areas of a printed product, such as a logo, brand name, graphic element, or decorative structure. It adds a refined contrast between matte and glossy surfaces and gives the finished product a more exclusive appearance.

The technique is especially effective when combined with carefully selected materials, high-quality printing, and a clear design concept. Used in the right way, partial UV varnish can enhance brand perception, improve the tactile experience, and make packaging or presentation materials feel more valuable and memorable.
