Recessed Grip

A recessed grip is a cut-out or indentation, most commonly integrated into a foam insert, that makes it easier to remove a product, sample, or other item from its fitted compartment. It is especially useful when the contents sit tightly in the insert and cannot be lifted out easily by hand.

What is a recessed grip used for?

Recessed grips are often used in custom foam inserts for premium packaging, presentation boxes, sample folders, and other high-quality packaging solutions. In many cases, products or samples are placed very firmly inside the foam to keep them secure during storage, transport, and presentation.

While this tight fit protects the contents, it can also make removal difficult. A recessed grip solves this problem by creating additional space next to the product cut-out. This allows the user to reach under or beside the item and remove it more comfortably.

Advantages of recessed grips

Recessed grips improve both the handling and the durability of a foam insert. They help the user remove the contents without pulling, bending, or pressing too hard on the surrounding foam. This reduces the risk of damaging the insert and also makes the packaging feel more practical and refined.

  • They make tightly fitted products easier to remove.
  • They help protect the foam insert from tearing or deformation.
  • They improve the user experience when opening and presenting the contents.
  • They can be positioned individually depending on the product shape.
  • They can be produced in different depths and sizes.

Where can recessed grips be placed?

Recessed grips can be integrated at different positions within a foam insert, depending on the size, weight, and shape of the product. They are commonly placed along one or more sides of the product cut-out, but they can also be positioned at corners or other access points where the item can be removed most easily.

The depth of the recessed grip can also be adjusted. A shallow grip may be sufficient for flat samples or lightweight items, while deeper grips are useful for larger, heavier, or more tightly fitted products.

For which types of foam are recessed grips recommended?

Recessed grips are particularly recommended for rigid foam inserts. Rigid foam is less flexible than softer foam materials, which means the contents usually sit especially firmly in the cut-out. Without a recessed grip, it may be difficult to remove the product cleanly and comfortably.

For this reason, recessed grips should not be omitted when designing rigid foam inserts for precisely fitted products. They are a small design detail, but they can have a significant impact on usability, product presentation, and the long-term quality of the insert.
