Relief Printing

Relief printing is a print finishing technique used to give printed lettering, logos, patterns, or other design elements a raised, three-dimensional appearance without deforming the material itself. In this sense, it can be understood as an alternative to embossing: instead of pressing a shape into or out of the substrate, a raised layer of varnish is applied on top of the printed surface.

Because of its noticeable tactile qualities, relief printing is often used when a design should not only be seen, but also felt. It can make selected details stand out, guide attention to important elements, and create a more premium impression. In some applications, raised varnish effects may also be used to reproduce tactile elements such as Braille.

The effect is created with a special relief varnish that is applied in a comparatively thick layer. This varnish has a very high solids content and cures under UV light. Once cured, the raised structure remains stable, creating the characteristic plastic, touchable effect.

Relief varnish is available in different formulations. It is often used in transparent versions to create glossy or matte raised effects. Depending on the desired result, colored particles or pigments can also be added, making colored relief prints possible.

How does it work?

Relief varnish is usually applied using screen printing machines. Screen printing is particularly suitable for this process because it allows a high layer thickness to be achieved with precision. The height of the varnish can vary depending on the design, the substrate, and the desired tactile effect.

During the screen printing process, the varnish is pressed through the fine mesh of a screen using a rubber squeegee. The varnish only passes through the open areas of the screen and is deposited onto the material below. Wherever no varnish should appear, the screen openings are blocked according to the print image.

For best results, relief varnish should be planned as a defined design element rather than as a random surface effect. It is typically applied as an overprinting layer on top of printed areas, logos, lettering, ornaments, or selected graphic details.

A distinctive visual and tactile effect

Transparent relief varnish can slightly change the appearance of the colors underneath it. Glossy versions intensify light reflections and can make colors appear deeper or more vibrant, while matte versions create a more subtle and refined effect.

Due to its raised structure and strong tactile quality, relief printing is especially effective for highlighting titles, brand names, company logos, decorative details, and premium packaging elements. It is commonly used when printed products should communicate quality, exclusivity, and attention to detail.

Relief printing has its limits

Although relief printing offers impressive results, it is not suitable for every design. Very fine lines and delicate details can be reproduced, but they cannot usually be built up with extremely high varnish layers. Even so, they can still stand out clearly when the design is prepared correctly.

Large varnished areas are more difficult to control. They may appear uneven, and the edges can become less precise. For this reason, relief printing is most effective when used selectively rather than across broad surfaces.

Relief varnish should also be avoided in areas that will later be folded, creased, cut, glued, or otherwise mechanically processed. It is generally not suitable for adhesive areas and cannot be printed over reliably. Careful planning in the print file is therefore essential to achieve a clean and durable result.

When used in the right way, relief printing is a powerful finishing technique that adds depth, texture, and a premium tactile experience to printed products.
