TIFF

TIFF stands for Tagged Image File Format and is a file format used to store image data and print data. The format was developed in 1986 by Microsoft in cooperation with Aldus. Unlike simpler image formats, TIFF was not designed only for storing image files, but also for professional use cases such as embedding color separations and color profiles. Depending on the file settings, TIFF can support color depths from 1 to 48 bits, alpha channels, and even saved Photoshop layers.

The Advantages

One of the main advantages of TIFF is its suitability for professional print production. The format supports the CMYK color model, making it a reliable option for exchanging print-ready data. This is especially important when images need to be reproduced with accurate colors and fine details.

TIFF is particularly useful for very high-resolution graphics because image data can be saved without lossy compression. In contrast to JPEG files, which often reduce file size by compressing and discarding image information, TIFF files can preserve the original image quality. This makes the format ideal for detailed print motifs, product images, scans, and other graphics where sharpness, color accuracy, and precision are essential.

Another benefit is the flexibility of the format. TIFF files can contain additional information such as transparency, layers, metadata, and color profiles. For designers, printers, and prepress teams, this can make TIFF a practical format when image quality and reliable processing are more important than small file size.

Disadvantages of the TIFF Format

The biggest disadvantage of the TIFF format is its complexity. Because TIFF supports many different options and variations, not every program can handle every possible TIFF file correctly. To improve compatibility, the TIFF specification defines a basic subset of TIFF files that every program supporting the format should be able to process.

Another disadvantage is the potentially large file size. Since TIFF files are often saved without lossy compression, they can require significantly more storage space than compressed formats such as JPEG. This can make them less practical for websites, email attachments, or applications where fast loading times and small file sizes are important.

TIFF files may also have technical limitations in certain use cases. Traditional TIFF structures often use 32-bit offset values, which can limit how much data can be addressed within a file. In the past, this was rarely a practical issue. However, in scientific fields such as astronomy, extremely large image files may exceed the limits of the standard TIFF format. For the printing industry, these limitations are usually not relevant, which is why TIFF remains a widely used and highly valued format for professional print data.
